Golf Betting on Betfair

Since pioneering the Exchange 25 years ago, Betfair has provided markets across thousands of golf events. The Sportsbook offers fixed-odds betting (where the odds accepted at the time of bet placement are guaranteed for payout) on PGA Tour, DP World Tour, LIV Golf, Majors and tournaments worldwide throughout the year.

All results are settled using official tournament results as confirmed by the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, R&A, USGA or relevant governing body. Full settlement rules are published on our platform.

Betfair is licensed and regulated by the UK Gambling Commission.

Understanding Golf Tournament Formats

Professional golf tournaments use different formats depending on the event.

Stroke Play (Most Tournaments)

Players compete over four rounds (72 holes), typically Thursday to Sunday. The player with the lowest total score wins. Most PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Major championships use stroke play. A cut is applied after 36 holes (two rounds), eliminating roughly half the field before the weekend.

Match Play

Players compete head-to-head, with each hole won, lost or halved. The player who wins the most holes wins the match. Used in the WGC Match Play, Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup.

Team Events

The Ryder Cup (Europe vs USA) and Presidents Cup (USA vs Internationals) feature foursomes (alternate shot), fourballs (best ball) and singles matches across three days.

LIV Golf Format

54-hole events (no cut) with a shotgun start, meaning all players begin simultaneously from different holes. Individual and team competitions run concurrently.

Golf Betting Markets Explained

Tournament Winner (Outright) - Bet on which player wins the tournament. If your player misses the cut, the bet loses. Playoffs are included in settlement.

Each-Way Betting - Back a player to win or finish in a specified number of places (e.g., top 5, top 8). Each-way terms vary by tournament and field size.

Top Nationality - Bet on the highest-finishing player from a specific country, e.g., Top American, Top European.

First Round Leader - Bet on which player leads after 18 holes.

Top 5/10/20 Finish - Bet on a player finishing within a specified position. Dead-heat rules apply if players tie.

Round Betting - Bet on which player from a selected group scores lowest in a specific round.

Match Betting (72-Hole) - Bet on which of two players finishes higher in the tournament. Both must make the cut for bets to stand (rules vary, check Betting Rules).

Hole-in-One - Bet on whether any player makes a hole-in-one during the tournament.

What to Consider When Betting on Golf

Course Form - Some players perform consistently well at specific courses. Check previous results at the venue before backing a player for events like The Masters or The Open.

Current Form - Recent tournament finishes, cuts made and scoring averages indicate how a player is performing.

Course Setup - Length, rough thickness and green speed vary by event. Long hitters have an advantage on some courses; accurate iron players thrive on others.

Weather - Wind and rain significantly affect scoring, particularly at links courses. Early or late tee times can face different conditions.

Strokes Gained Statistics - Metrics like Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, Strokes Gained: Putting and Driving Accuracy help identify which players suit specific course demands.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if a player withdraws before the tournament starts?
If a player withdraws before teeing off in the first round, outright bets are void and stakes returned.

What happens if a player withdraws mid-tournament?
If a player withdraws after starting, outright bets lose. Markets already decided (e.g., First Round Leader if the first round was completed) usually stand. Check our Betting Rules.

How are playoffs settled?
Playoff results count for outright winner markets. The player who wins the playoff is settled as the tournament winner.

What does Dead Heat mean?
If players tie for a place-paying position in each-way or top finish markets, dead-heat rules apply. Your stake is divided by the number of players who tied, with winnings calculated on that reduced stake.

What are each-way terms?
Each-way betting lets you back a player to win or place. Terms vary by tournament (e.g., 1/4 odds for top 8 places). Check the market for specific terms before placing your bet.

Can I cash out on golf bets?
Cash Out is available on selected markets. The value is based on live odds and may differ from your potential return.
