Betfair has offered tennis betting markets for over 25 years. The Sportsbook offers fixed-odds betting (where the odds accepted at the time of bet placement are guaranteed for payout) on ATP Tour, WTA Tour, Grand Slams, Davis Cup and Challenger events throughout the year.
For those who prefer peer-to-peer betting, the Betfair Tennis Exchange allows you to back or lay outcomes at odds set by other customers, giving you the option to bet against a player winning.
All results are settled using official scores as confirmed by the ATP, WTA, ITF or relevant tournament organiser. Full settlement rules are published on our platform.
Betfair is licensed and regulated by the UK Gambling Commission.
Professional tennis uses different formats depending on the tournament.
Best of Five Sets (Men's Grand Slams)
Men's singles at the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open are best of five sets. A player must win three sets, meaning matches can end in straight sets (3-0) or go the distance (3-2). Fifth sets use a 10-point tiebreak at 6-6 at all four Grand Slams (unified rule adopted in 2022).
Best of Three Sets (All Other Events)
All WTA matches, ATP Tour events outside Grand Slams, and doubles are best of three sets. A player must win two sets.
Tiebreaks
When a set reaches 6-6, a tiebreak determines the winner. Standard tiebreaks are first to 7 points with a 2-point margin required.
Match Winner - Bet on which player wins the match. If a player retires, settlement depends on sets completed (see Tennis Betting Rules).
Set Betting - Predict the exact scoreline in sets, e.g., Player A to win 2-1.
Set Winner - Bet on who wins a specific set.
Game Handicap - A handicap applied to total games, e.g., Player A -4.5 means they must win by 5+ games.
Total Games (Over/Under) - Predict whether total games will be above or below a set line.
First Set Winner - Bet on who wins the opening set.
To Win a Set - Back an underdog to win at least one set, even if they lose the match.
Tiebreak in Match - Bet on whether any set goes to a tiebreak.
On the Betfair Exchange, you can also lay players (bet against them winning), which is not available on the Sportsbook.
Popular fixtures that are in progress or upcoming include A Zverev v Ma Landaluce in which you can bet on Alexander Zverev to win at odds of 1.9, Cobolli v Dimitrov in which you can bet on Flavio Cobolli to win at odds of 1.4, Da Merida v Medvedev in which you can bet on Daniel Merida to win at odds of 3.75.

What to Consider When Betting on Tennis
Surface - Tennis is played on hard courts, clay and grass. Clay suits baseliners; grass rewards strong servers. Check a player's surface record before betting on events like the French Open (clay) or Wimbledon (grass).
Form and Fitness - The tennis calendar runs almost year-round. Recent results, injuries and scheduling fatigue affect performance.
Head-to-Head Record - Some players consistently perform well or poorly against specific opponents regardless of ranking.
Tournament Stage - Players often find form as tournaments progress. Early rounds can produce upsets; later rounds tend to favour higher seeds.
Conditions - Outdoor matches are affected by heat, wind and altitude. Indoor events play faster.
The Betfair Exchange displays real-time odds movements, which can indicate how the market views a player's chances as conditions or news changes.
What happens if a player retires mid-match?
Settlement depends on how much of the match was completed. Markets already decided (e.g., First Set Winner) usually stand. Full details in our Betting Rules.
What happens if a match is postponed?
If completed within 48 hours, bets stand. If not, bets may be void.
How are walkovers settled?
If a player withdraws before the match starts, all bets are void and stakes returned.
What does Game Handicap mean?
A game handicap adds or subtracts games from a player's total. Example: Player A -4.5 on a 6-4, 6-3 scoreline wins by 5 games (13-7), so the handicap bet wins.
Cash Out is available on selected markets. The value is based on live odds and may differ from your potential return.
