What is Specials Betting?

Specials are bets you won’t find in general betting markets. While most fans bet on the outcome of a match, Specials allow you to bet on other events in and around the game.

For example, you could use Specials to bet on transfers, relegations, promotions and league rankings once the tournament has wrapped up.

How to Read Specials Odds

Specials odds are presented as fractions. The left number is how much you stand to win, and the right number is how much you need to bet to win the left number. With 10/1 odds, you’d get £10 back for every £1 you bet.

Odds can also be expressed as decimals. While fractional odds show the expected profit, decimal figures show the full return based on a £1 bet. Odds at 2.5 would get you a £2.50 return for every £1 you bet, with £1.50 of that being profit.

At the Betfair Exchange, you’ll also find back and lay odds. With back odds, you bet that something will happen. This means you never lose more than you have bet.

Lay odds work differently. You bet that something won’t happen. This means you’re betting against other bettors. It also means you’ll pay a liability cost up front, to cover your loss if you’re wrong.

Specials markets can vary wildly, that’s what makes them unique.

The markets available change depending on when you’re betting. If a cup draw is coming up, you can bet on those draws. You can also bet on changes to the club captain, manager or player transfers.

Through Specials, you can also take an over/under bet on the number of goals a star player will make during a tournament.

How to Bet on Specials

Betting on Specials is no different from taking other bets.

1. You’ll need to have a Betfair account with funds stored in it.

2. Navigate to this Specials page and find a bet that suits you. Alternatively, you may find a Specials tab on some of our tournament pages.

3. Add the bet to your betslip, decide on your stake and click the ‘place bet’ button.

Then you wait to see if your bet wins or loses. If you win, you’ll find the winnings in your account. If you lose, you lose your stake. If you lose a lay bet, you lose the liability taken from you when you placed the bet. Always remember to play for fun and gamble responsibly.
