Timeform View

ALTAREQ has made an eye-catching start for a yard that does well with his type and he's taken to open his account on just his third start in a handicap. Unexposed Antipodes is feared most as he bids for a hat-trick, while Per Contra went close in a similar event over C&D last summer and also appeals in a wide-open race.

Timeform Comments

Astro King (IRE)
C&D winner who went close in the John Smith's Cup here before landing the Cambridgeshire later in 2023. However, he'd been off the best part of 2 years (also had a breathing operation) prior to his Newmarket comeback and may still need this.
Antipodes (IRE)
Strong form in maidens last year, including when off the mark over 1m at Windsor in June, and he found a chunk of improvement to follow up over the same C&D on handicap debut/reappearance. Shapes as though the longer trip will suit, and this progressive sort can make a bold bid for the hat-trick.
Rathgar
Straightforward type who was well positioned to follow up his Newbury success at Epsom last time, getting first run but always holding on, though a 5 lb rise may just foil his hat-trick bid.
Fantasy Believer (IRE)
Ran up to his best when landing a useful handicap at Doncaster last September but was reported to have lost his action over the same C&D the following month. Has proven himself capable when fresh, though, and has a good-value claimer aboard for his return.
Wahdan (IRE)
Useful 3-y-o in France but lost his way for Joseph Patrick O'Brien last year. Changed hands for only 8,000 gns and has since been gelded, but it's hard to be confident of a revival on stable debut.
Love Beach (IRE)
Low-mileage 4-y-o who improved to win on reappearance for the second consecutive season prior to holding his own in a higher grade when third (behind City of Delight) at Goodwood last time, not given a hard time after the winner had flown.
Spioradalta
Tough front runner who notched his seventh win in just over a year at Ripon last time, and while it's hard to discount one with such a gutsy attitude off only 3 lb higher, stall 14 isn't ideal in a race where the pace is likely to be contested.
City Of Delight (USA)
Most progressive when notching a sixth handicap win in 7 starts at Epsom in April last year and while without success since, he has finished runner-up 3 times in this sort of grade, getting closest to an impressive winner at Goodwood last time.
Castle Stuart (IRE)
Dual winner for Karl Burke who was too keen to benefit from the step up in trip at Carlisle (11.2f) last time, though a hood goes on for the first time here, and the likely strong pace can only be to his advantage.
Rainbow Nebula (FR)
Resumed progress with victory at Redcar (1m) on second start this season, and while he confirmed his effectiveness for this trip when fifth in the Zetland Gold Cup there last time, this looks another competitive handicap.
Cloth Of Gold (IRE)
Lightly-raced 4-y-o who left behind his handicap debut/reappearance when getting off the mark at Newcastle last October. Needs more off 8 lb higher in a better race, though has been gelded in the interim.
Sportingsilvermine (IRE)
Capitalised on a falling mark to land a third success for his excellent yard at Beverley last time, readily seeing off Urban Glimpse by 6 lengths, and he can remain competitive on the best of his old form.
Per Contra (IRE)
Better than ever when readily winning off 2 lb higher at Newcastle on penultimate start last season and shaped as though on his way back to that sort of form when third (not ideally placed) at Carlisle latest. He's gone close previously over C&D and another big run is expected.
Dark Moon Rising (IRE)
Course winner hasn't won since November 2024, but he posted another creditable effort when fifth over 1½m here last time and could be more competitive with a stronger gallop to aim at.
Urban Glimpse
Runner-up in a strong 3-y-o C&D handicap last year, he was no match for the well-treated Sportingsilvermine at Beverley on his latest start but looks to have plenty in his favour this time, including the addition of cheekpieces.
Altareq
Lightly-raced sort from a good family who has caught the eye on both starts for excellent new yard, shaping as though ahead of his mark when third in a good-quality C&D handicap on return before finishing with running left in a tactical affair at Hamilton (8.5f), and he looks the one to be with.
