Timeform View

This is wide open but GRAND CLERMONT arrives in fine form for David Pipe and is fancied to quickly resume winning ways on the back of a very good recent Worcester runner-up. Fellow course scorer Riskintheground heads the list of dangers, although a good case can also be made for Alien Storm, Hold Your Fort and Ki Woo in this cracking handicap.

Timeform Comments

Hang In There (IRE)
Took this in 2024 (from 9 lb higher) and kept mistakes to a minimum when a solid fourth of 7 to Time To Bite in handicap chase at Fakenham (3m) last month. Visor goes on and this veteran can't be ruled out.
Riskintheground (IRE)
Landed Silver Trophy at Haydock in April and added to that in 10-runner handicap chase at Perth (3m) 3 weeks ago. Up 4 lb but this course scorer is not taken lightly.
Twig
Veteran but as good as ever when winning his first 2 starts last season, latterly the Becher at Aintree. Well beaten in the National back there but back on song with third of 7 in handicap chase at Bangor (3m) last time. Also captured this in 2023.
Alien Storm (IRE)
Scored over fences at Plumpton and Doncaster before Christmas and posted a good second of 7 in handicap chase at Bangor (3m) last month. Came home clear of the rest there so very much one to consider.
Ki Woo (FR)
Got back on the up with victory in 8-runner handicap chase at Cartmel (25f) last month. Up 5 lb but that form has been franked so he's well in the mix.
Peaky Boy (IRE)
Won 3 of 4 starts over hurdles/fences (all at Cheltenham) for Nicky Henderson in 2024. Lightly raced and below that level for current yard since but better signs when third over C&D and Worcester on last 2 runs.
Hold Your Fort (IRE)
Gained a third win of last season when seeing off 2 rivals at Ascot (3m) in March. Even better form when placed at Haydock (3¼m) and Fakenham (3m) since so should go well again.
Queensbury Boy (IRE)
Bumper/dual hurdle winner for Harry Derham. Proved wayward before walking over in handicap chase at Hereford and followed it with a good second of 4 in handicap chase here (2½m) later in May.
Time To Bite (IRE)
Back to winning ways in veterans' event at Fakenham (3m) in May and backed it up with a good third of 4 in handicap chase at Newton Abbot (3¼m) last time, going with enthusiasm. Needs considering dropped back in trip.
Grand Clermont (FR)
French import who ended his time there with a pair of claiming chase wins. Impressed for new yard when scoring over C&D in May and posted a very good second of 8 to Samuel Spade at Worcester (23f) 17 days ago. Expected to be bang there with promising rider taking off handy 7 lb.
Samuel Spade (GER)
A 5-time winner over hurdles. Left his chasing debut well behind when winning 8-runner handicap chase at Worcester (23f) 17 days ago by 2½ lengths from Grand Clermont, jumping much better on that occasion. Up 5 lb and not certain to fence so well this time.
Regarde (IRE)
Arrives in good nick, soon ridden but staying on well late when second of 7 in handicap chase at Aintree (25f) last month. Will need to travel better with blinkers now replacing usual cheekpieces if he's to play a part.
Imperial Alex (IRE)
Posted a career best when winning 5-runner handicap chase at Stratford (3½m) 29 days ago. Up 3 lb but this C&D scorer is no forlorn hope.
Stratagem (FR)
Resumed winning ways under today's rider in 5-runner handicap chase at Cartmel (29f) last month. Not beaten far after 8 lb rise there on Friday. Change of headgear.
