LOVE ME TENDER runs in the same colours as the recent Willie Mullins-trained winners of this and there's a good chance the reason he's yet to see the track for his new connections has been to preserve his mark for this. Klassleader had firm ground as a possible excuse in the Old Newton Cup and this course winner is taken to resume his progression and provide the main threat. Daiquiri Bay and Emit also make the shortlist, with Real Dream one who could go well at likely bigger odds.

Timeform Comments

Opportunity
Much improved this season having been gelded, following up his ready Carlisle success in the Duke of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot. Creditable 1¼ lengths second of 8 to Enfjaar in Group 3 Glorious Stakes at Goodwood (1½m, good to firm) 21 days ago. Up in trip. Probably capable of even better.
Epic Poet (IRE)
Smart hold-up performer who posted a good third in the Yorkshire Cup over C&D in May but has posted lesser effort in listed/Group 3 events back here on his last 2 starts. Fourth in this 2 years ago.
Paradias (GER)
Has been a tremendous servant for connections and landed another win at Lingfield (1½m, all-weather) in February. Respectable efforts in 2m Group 3/listed events at Sandown last twice but not obviously well treated off 107.
Furthur (IRE)
Landed the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer at Newbury last August. Below his best this season, including remote last of 4 in Sandown listed race 7 weeks ago. Given a bit of a chance by the handicapper as a result but leap of faith needed in first-time cheekpieces.
Spinning Wheel
Won 3 times in 2025. Returned with a fine second at Goodwood (1¾m) in May and bounced back from a poor run on soft ground at Epsom when scoring over 11f on all-weather at Southwell 16 days ago. His penalty is offset by Mason Paetel's claim. Drawn widest.
Tarriance
Successful 3 times in 2025, including the Melrose over C&D. Struggled in Group races at the start of the summer but ran a cracker back in a handicap when 3 lengths fourth of 13 to Hopewell Rock at Glorious Goodwood (1¾m, good to firm) 21 days ago.
Mr Hollywood (IRE)
Smart at best in Germany and useful form in France last year. First Flat start for this yard when third of 13 in Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot (21.6f, good to firm) in June and successful in a maiden hurdle at Galway since. One of 2 runners for a stable with a strong recent record in this.
Daiquiri Bay
Plenty of good efforts in defeat in strong 3-y-o handicaps last season (including third in Melrose over C&D) and has taken it up another notch this season, winning at Newmarket (1½m) and Copper Horse at Royal Ascot (1¾m). Appears to have been saved for this since. Likely to go well.
Hopewell Rock (IRE)
Tackling 1¾m for the first time when seeing off 12 rivals in Glorious Goodwood handicap (good to firm; has won on soft), although he benefited from a trouble-free run. 4 lb penalty.
Emit (IRE)
Last seen finishing a good 5¼ lengths fourth of 17 to Opportunity in Duke of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot (1½m, good to firm) in June. Ryan Moore takes the ride again on a 4-y-o who looks to have been laid out for this.
Paddy The Squire
Had a good 2025, winning 3 times, and has improved again in defeat this time round, finishing third of 16 to Daiquiri Bay in Copper Horse at Royal Ascot (1¾m, good to firm) before second of 12 in Old Newton Cup at Newmarket (1½m, firm). Equally at home under today's likely softer conditions.
Poetic Sound (IRE)
Back to best when winning 12-runner handicap at the Curragh (1¾m, good) in June. Respectable seventh of 11 in 2m handicap there since. Wears first-time cheekpieces. Others look better treated.
Align The Stars (IRE)
Better than ever when bagging the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle (2m) in June but subsequent 7¾ lengths seventh of 13 to Hopewell Rock at Glorious Goodwood (1¾m, good to firm) suggests the handicapper is in charge for now.
Burdett Road
Smart under both codes at his best but has been operating below that level on the Flat in Britain this summer, including well behind a few of these at Goodwood at the beginning of the month.
Beylerbeyi
Consistent sort who landed the Cesarewitch at Newmarket last October. Looked right back at top of his game when fourth of 10 in handicap at Newmarket July meeting (1¾m, good to firm) 6 weeks ago, not ideally placed.
Stressfree (FR)
Usually reliable performer last year, including fourth in this race. Reappeared with a good second at Ripon in April but below form all 3 starts since.
Klassleader
Low-mileage 4-y-o who improved again to win 1½m Dante meeting handicap here (good to soft) on reappearance in May. Possibly unsuited by a firm surface when only seventh in the Old Newton Cup and good chance he can resume his progression now. High on the shortlist.
Ascending (IRE)
Progressive in 2025, bagging the 2½m Ascot Stakes at the Royal Meeting before an excellent second to Ethical Diamond in this race. Hasn't reproduced that form this season but better than the result on his last 2 starts and no shock were he to bounce back to form with a bang.
Square Necker (FR)
Confirmed debut promise when winning a Dundalk maiden (1½m) in December and has made further progress for his new yard, winning 13f handicaps at Hamilton (good) and Ayr (good to soft) in the first half of the summer. Should be more to come from this lightly-raced 4-y-o but he has a tricky draw.
Real Dream (IRE)
Fifth in this off 7 lb higher last season. Better than the result (didn't get a run until the leaders were beyond recall) when 4 lengths seventh of 10 to Valedictory at Newmarket (1¾m, good to firm) 43 days ago. Not discounted for a stable which targets these top handicaps.
Circus Of Rome
Made good progress in 2025, winning 3 times. Only tenth of 20 when one of the market leaders for the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle latest but there's a feeling he still has unfinished business as a stayer.
Love Me Tender (GER)
Rapidly reached a useful level for Peter Schiergen last autumn, winning twice over 9f in Germany before 2 lengths fourth of 7 in listed race at Chantilly (1¼m, soft). Changed hands for €180,000 last November. Very interesting new recruit for yard seeking a third win in this in the last 4 years.
