A competitive handicap that is likely to be fiercely run and STOIC POET gets the vote having found only a thriving filly too good at Haydock. Solid cases can also be made for Homestrait, Sandy Craic and Redcar winner Maximum Velocity.

Timeform Comments

Born A Star (IRE)
Made all over C&D in August and better signs this season at Hamilton (8.3f) 3 weeks ago, again rather too enthusiastic back in a front-running role. Down another 3 lb and this return to 7f will suit. Could go well if settling better.
Sandy Craic (IRE)
Yet to win but she's proving reliable and straightforward and fared easily the best of those ridden close to the pace when fifth in 20-runner 7f York handicap a fortnight ago. Cheekpieces go on and she can surely find a race.
Homestrait (IRE)
Won 7f Doncaster maiden and C&D seller last summer. Found a jolt of improvement for fitting of cheekpieces when going close at Catterick (7f) a fortnight ago, forcing the favourite to pull out all the stops. Nudged up 2 lb and can go well again if the headgear has the same effect.
Wise Crack (IRE)
Best effort in 4 maiden/novice events for John Ryan at 2 when third of 11 over 7f at Lingfield (polytrack) in September. Stepped up on first outing for this yard when fifth at Doncaster 3 weeks ago (took keen hold) and no surprise if this trainer finds the key to him.
Highland Shah (FR)
Still looked a work in progress when fourth on return at Catterick (7f) last month, no less free for being gelded and fitted with a hood (Sandy Craic second). May come on for that and makes handicap debut now.
Stoic Poet (IRE)
Matched the pick of his form dropped to this grade when second to a thriving winner at Haydock (7f) a fortnight ago. Unlikely to remain a maiden for long on that showing.
Yorkshire Queen
Runner-up in a 6f selling nursery at Newcastle in November and made a promising return at Southwell (7f) early last month. Back to free-going ways at Haydock since though, and this looks tough.
The Anthony Gover
Matched previous form sent handicapping fitted with blinkers when sixth at Wolverhampton (7f) 3 weeks ago, not seen to best effect from a wide draw. Dropped 2 lb and could fare better here.
Maximum Velocity (IRE)
His April Leicester second is strong form for the grade and he got back on the up with positive tactics employed as he opened his account in 7f Redcar handicap last month. Up 5 lb and that might not prove his limit.
Walk On Walk On (IRE)
Made the frame twice last year when trained by Des Donovan and emerged from the doldrums with new headgear fitted when fourth in 7f Redcar handicap last time. This is tougher.
