A fascinating renewal that will likely prove another thorough test of stamina for CALANDAGAN, but he's a better horse this time around and can reverse the placings with last year's winner Jan Brueghel, extending his remarkable sequence of Group 1 victories in the process.

Timeform Comments

Bay City Roller (IRE)
Very smart winner of the Grosser Preis von Bayern over 1½m last November and has backed it up with 2 fine performances this season, travelling best but unable to get by the game Almaqam in the Tattersalls Gold Cup. This is a stronger race, though, and he's probably booked for minor honours.
Calandagan (IRE)
Only beaten by a very willing Jan Brueghel here 12 months ago, though has underlined he's a top-class performer with 5 consecutive Group 1 victories since, taking the Sheema Classic comfortably last time. His stamina could get tested to the full again in this race but he's clearly the best of these.
Convergent (IRE)
Progressive sort has earned another crack at the highest level, having conceded weight to some smart rivals when successful in the Group 3 John Porter on return, despite meeting plenty of trouble. However, he needs more to beat last year's 1-2, on ground perhaps softer than ideal.
Illinois (IRE)
Finished runner-up in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and Goodwood Cup last season and shaped as if better for the run when third in the Ormonde at Chester on reappearance. However, he's unlikely to be good enough to win a top-end Group 1 over 1½m and surely has other targets down the line, regardless.
Jan Brueghel (IRE)
High-class horse who produced a career best when outstaying Calandagan in this race last year. Looked as good as ever when successful in the Ormonde on return, and with 2 very-smart stablemates to help make this a thorough test, he again bids to capitalise on any chinks in Calandagan's stamina.
Lambourn (IRE)
Handled this track well when making all in the 2025 Derby before doubling up in the Irish Derby. Subsequently beaten in the Great Voltigeur/St Leger, and though the return to 1½m will suit following his success in the Huxley Stakes on return, he's likely to set this up for last year's principals.
