Timeform View

Top-weight SPIRIT OF ACKLAM should be able to cope with this step back up in trip given the speed-favouring nature of Chester and may be able to capitalise on the drop into 0-80 company after an encouraging reappearance. Newtown Duke ran well over C&D last time and also merits consideration from an unchanged mark, with Helmsley also shortlisted having dropped further in the weights.

Timeform Comments

Spirit Of Acklam
Won at Ayr on his second of 3 starts last season and shaped as if retaining all ability after a year off when fifth of 10 in at Ripon (1¼m, good) 16 days ago, unable to sustain his effort only late. Too free on his previous start over this trip but rates as an interesting runner down in grade.
Wiltshire Wonder
Won twice at Southwell over 1½m in 2024 but the track only twice last season, failing to beat a rival when last seen at Wolverhampton in October. Sold for just 5,000 gns from Archie Watson subsequently and others are preferred after 8 months off.
Helmsley (IRE)
Winner of a Redcar novice in October on final start for Ralph Beckett. Step back in right direction back on turf when seventh at Thirsk in May and went a long way to backing up having done plenty in front when sixth of 17 at York (1½m, good to soft) 31 days ago. Now 3 lb lower and in tongue tie.
Free Speech (IRE)
Back-to-back winner in 2024 for Ed Dunlop and has made an encouraging start for current connections, beaten just a head by an unexposed 3-y-o in a 5-runner handicap at Wolverhampton (1½m) 26 days ago. Wasn't the most consistent last season but clearly capable of going close from this kind of mark.
Oman (IRE)
Turned in best effort for a good while when scoring in decisive fashion at Goodwood under a 3-lb claimer last week, seemingly helped by the drop back down in grade and refitting of headgear. Remains potentially well treated from 3 lb higher. Also engaged 5.28 Chester Friday.
Newtown Duke (IRE)
Got off the mark at Newcastle (1m) in November and returned from 6 months off with a good third of 15 in handicap at C&D last month. No reason why he shouldn't go well again from unchanged mark.
Kasgani (IRE)
Ex-Irish maiden shaped really well on his yard debut when third at Nottingham on return, finishing well after meeting plenty of trouble and again didn't get a clean run of things when sixth there 10 days ago, albeit partly due to his own hanging. Remains on a competitive mark.
Shipshape (IRE)
In good heart for new yard, winning 1¾m Southwell handicap in April and just failing at Thirsk next time. Back to winning ways in a 4-runner event over 13f at Hamilton 17 days ago and he's respected again, for all wide draw and greater test of speed he'll meet here aren't certain to suit.
Imperial Trooper (IRE)
It's now 15 runs since his last win in 2024 and he never really looked like justifying support when sixth of 9 in handicap at Haydock (1¼m, good to soft) 22 days ago. Others preferred.
Golspie (IRE)
Free-going sort arrives after 6 in-frame efforts on the bounce, including when fourth of 14 in handicap at Kempton (11f) only 3 days ago. Can give a good account without posing serious threat to principals.
Idyllic
Dual winner last summer but ended 2025 on a low-key note and she shaped as if she'd come on for the run when sixth of 12 in handicap at Thirsk (1½m, good, 25/1) 56 days ago (has since had breathing operation). Hood on 1st time.
Havachoc
Enjoyed a productive winter on all-weather, completing a hat-trick over at Newcastle in February. Continued in good form since and went down rallying by just a neck to a last-time-out winner there 11 days ago. 2 lb out of the weights here but he's effective on turf and clearly in good form.
