Timeform View

AALTO has a win and a close second to a recent dual Group 1 runner-up to show from his 2 attempts in this race and a C&D second a fortnight ago suggests he's set to enhance his strong record in this historic handicap. Buckingham Palace 2-3 Elarak and Great Acclaim head the dangers along with the selection's stablemate Supido.

Timeform Comments

Royal Zabeel (IRE)
Enhanced his fine all-weather record when taking listed contest at Southwell (6f) in November and showed he's just as effective on turf when landing a second C&D win of his career last Saturday. A top-class handicap performance will be needed under a penalty, although Conor Whiteley's claim helps.
Two Tribes
Completed a notable big handicap double in a week when bagging the International at Ascot and Stewards' Cup at Goodwood last summer. Also successful in 6f Meydan handicap in January but hasn't scaled the same heights since, including only twelfth in Wokingham at Royal Ascot.
Elarak
Kingman gelding who won over 1m here last summer and ended his 3-y-o campaign with a 7f success on the Rowley course. Back on the up with a close second in the Buckingham Palace at Royal Ascot (7f, good to firm) 23 days ago. Big player off the same mark.
Great Acclaim
Has an excellent record in the last 12 months or so, including placing in the ultra-competitive Victoria Cup and Buckingham Palace at Ascot (both 7f, good to firm) on last 2 starts. Very closely matched with Elarak from form in the latter.
Witch Hunter (FR)
Proved he's still capable of running to a smart level when successful over 1m at Newcastle in January but hasn't been in the same form since.
Colombier
A 4-time winner in France who stepped up markedly on his stable debut when winning 16-runner handicap at Epsom (7f, good to soft) last month. Not in the same form at Royal Ascot since, though. Has a hood added now.
Dark Tornado (IRE)
Two 7f wins for Denis Quinn last spring and back on the up for new yard when seeing off Aalto over C&D (good) 16 days ago. A 6 lb penalty demands more but dangerous to rule out with the stable enjoying a purple patch.
The Fingal Raven (IRE)
Winner over 1m at Meydan in January. Posted a couple of respectable fifths there subsequently but well held behind a few of these in the Buckingham Palace at Royal Ascot on his return to Britain.
Back In Black (IRE)
Quite a lightly-raced sort and has proved relatively consistent. Winless since last spring but has placed on all 3 outings this season, tongue tied first time (retained) when second of 11 at Newcastle 16 days ago. Same mark here so should be very competitive.
Supido (FR)
Lost his way last year after a promising start for this yard but back to form with a bang when landing Chester handicap on return. Backed that up when third there later in May and not seen to best effect at Newcastle latest (likely still in form). One of 2 solid contenders for connections.
Christian David (IRE)
Bookended 2025 with victories at Newbury/Lingfield. Back to that sort of form when third on the Rowley Mile in April but 2 lesser runs have followed. Others are much more obvious.
Nostrum
Smart earlier in his career but struggled for David O'Meara in 2025. Much more encouraging signs for new yard this year, notably his Sandown second in May, but he disappointed with cheekpieces added over C&D last month.
Aalto (FR)
Won this in 2024 and only narrowly denied by the very well-handicapped More Thunder last year. Returned to form when second to Dark Tornado over C&D 16 days ago and looks primed for another bold bid in this race (5 lb lower than last year).
Physique (IRE)
Front runner who is back at the top of his game, building on Beverley near miss when easily making all over C&D (good to firm) 22 days ago. Feasibly treated under a 6 lb penalty but he'll surely find it a lot harder to dominate this much deeper race.
Dapper Guest (IRE)
A winner 3 times last year, including over C&D. Best effort this year when fourth of 10 over C&D 22 days ago but that was a Class 4 and suspicion he might prove vulnerable in this much higher grade.
