Timeform View

The inaugural running of this marathon contest using stalls with VALIANCY making plenty of appeal. Successful on return at Hamilton, he very much caught the eye when sixth in the Copper Horse at Royal Ascot in June, keeping on well having been asked to come from a long way back (also widest of all). He earns the vote with potential for better still over this longer trip. Ascot Stakes second Defiantly and Highwind head a strong Irish challenge, whilst Believitanducan is another holding claims.

Timeform Comments

Maxi King (IRE)
Consistent without getting his head in front during 2025 and he enhanced his excellent record fresh (unlucky not to win) when second in Chester Cup back in May. Ran well without fully suggesting he wants this far when fourth in last month's Queen Alexandra (21.6f) at Royal Ascot, though.
Duke Of Oxford
Proved better than ever when winning 2m handicaps at Kempton and Newcastle at the turn of the year. Still to confirm himself anywhere near as effective on turf (albeit lightly raced) but this is at least more suitable than Group company he's contested of late. Ryan Moore booked.
Defiantly (FR)
Lightly-raced sort who easily bettered his 2 previous efforts this year in a change of headgear when going down narrowly to his stablemate in last month's Ascot Stakes (2½m), rallying once headed. Stamina clearly his strong suit and a repeat gives him solid claims from 4 lb higher.
Valiancy (IRE)
Ended last season on the up and picked up where he left off with stylish success at Hamilton (13f) in May. Came from a long way back (also widest of all) when an eye-catching sixth in Copper Horse at Royal Ascot (1¾m) since and he's most interesting up further in trip in refitted cheekpieces.
Berkshire Sundance (IRE)
Enhanced his very good strike rate in handicaps when winning over 2m at Newcastle on Good Friday. Backed that up from career-high mark when sixth in Chester Cup next time prior to facing stiff task in Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot latest. Return to handicap in his favour now.
Annabel's Ghost (IRE)
Useful sort who won 4 times at trips ranging between 13f to 2m for Andre Fabre and acquitted himself well after 8 weeks for new yard when fifth in last month's Ascot Stakes (2½m, good to firm). Confirmed stamina for the trip then and not ruled out following a 1 lb rise.
Alphonse Le Grande (IRE)
Back down to the mark he landed the Cesarewitch from in 2024 and with his first 2 starts this season best overlooked, he shaped better than the bare result (left with lot to do) when fifth behind Believitanducan in last month's Northumberland Vase. Rates a live each-way player.
Believitanducan (IRE)
Continues to go from strength to strength, successful 3 times over hurdles upon joining Alan King. Continued fine work on the Flat, making it 3-3 in 2026 when digging deep to land 20-runner Northumberland Vase (2m) 5 weeks ago. Player up 5 lb now stamina is tested further.
Anniversary
Turned in best effort of the season when second in 1¾m handicap at Salisbury in May. However, hasn't replicated that in 2 runs since, outpaced from 2f out when fifth of 6 in handicap at Ascot (1¾m) 3 weeks ago. Up significantly in trip now and his best efforts have come on ground softer than good.
Charging Thunder
Multiple Flat/hurdles winner upon joining present yard and he was well suited by the increased emphasis on stamina in latter sphere when bolting up in 6-runner handicap hurdle at Stratford (2¾m) 12 days ago. Not taken lightly from his reduced Flat mark.
Highwind (FR)
Hasn't stood much racing in recent seasons but confirmed his return to form when 4½ lengths fourth at Curragh (2m) in June, doing best of those ridden positively in a soundly-run race. That was an encouraging effort and he's an interesting contender for his all-conquering jumps yard.
Sax Appeal
Successful 8 times on all-weather and he ran right up to his best in refitted blinkers when third in last month's Northumberland Vase (2m) at Newcastle. Probably went off too hard when third at Southwell since but overall record on turf suggests it's best to look elsewhere.
Sea Of Kings (IRE)
Maiden who signed off his 3-y-o campaign with a solid fourth in the Melrose at York's Ebor Meeting. Run to a similar level both starts this year and definite air of unfinished business about him, not least over marathon trips.
St Mawes (IRE)
Low-mileage 4-y-o who ended 2025 firmly on the up with 2m handicap wins at Kempton and Nottingham in the autumn. Returned this year with a pair of placed finishes albeit taking a strong hold. Takes a step up in trip and interesting on stable debut having left Emma Lavelle.
Kentucky River (IRE)
Gradually progressive in staying handicaps for Ollie Sangster during 2025 and similar theme in handicap hurdles for new yard in recent months, registering a second win from last 3 starts at Warwick (19f) in June. Could have more to offer back in this sphere now stamina is tested further.
Aggagio (FR)
Course specialist who registered a fifth victory over 2m here last June prior to finding his stamina stretched when fifth in this corresponding race 12 months ago. Hasn't been firing on all cylinders in a trio of starts so far this season and others appeal more. Hood back on.
Gooloogong (IRE)
Gambled on returned to the Flat and showed his best form for a few seasons when winning at Kempton (2m) in May. Seemingly found wanting in higher grade over C&D both subsequent starts, though, and well beaten on sole previous try in this race. Work to do from out of the weights.
Trojan Sun
Successful 4 times in 2025 and capitalised on drop in grade to open his account for season at Carlisle (1¾m) in June. However, not at same level on 2 of his 3 starts since, finishing down the field at York (16.3f) 7 days ago. Passed over up in class from out of the weights.
