CARMERS couldn't live with the very best stayers in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot but he's the one to beat back in calmer waters. Kizlyar, who runs here instead of the Ebor at York, had the form of his Ascot Stakes success boosted by stablemate Defiantly's comfortable win at Glorious Goodwood and he may provide a bigger threat than the returning Queenstown.

Timeform Comments

Carmers (IRE)
Smart colt who took Queen's Vase at 2025 Royal Ascot. Resumed winning ways in workmanlike fashion in 2m Down Royal listed event in May and creditable 12 lengths sixth of 11 to Scandinavia in Gold Cup at Royal Ascot (2½m, good to firm) since. Has first-time tongue tie added to his usual headgear.
Dallas Star (FR)
Very useful front-runner who is without a win since February 2025. Creditable fifth of 8 in handicap at Gowran (12.5f, good to firm, 7/1) 10 days ago but it's likely his wait for another win will go on.
Kizlyar (IRE)
Failed to win over hurdles for Joseph O'Brien over the winter but it's been a different story back on the Flat, following up his Killarney conditions race success by edging out stablemate Defiantly (won at Goodwood since) in the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot (2½m, good to firm) in June.
Layfayette (IRE)
Best effort for a while when winning heavy-ground listed event at Limerick in June but only fifth in the Ballyroan at Leopardstown since.
Leinster (IRE)
Impressive winner of this last year. Ran well on first 2 starts this year and better than he showed at Limerick last time. McMonagle prefers Kizlyar, though. Tongue tied first time.
Queenstown (IRE)
Course winner. Ended 2025 with good 2 lengths second of 7 to Arrow Eagle in Group 1 Prix Royal-Oak at Saint-Cloud (15.4f, soft) in October. Player if fully primed after 10 months off.
Asakir (IRE)
Zarak gelding from the family of top-class winner up to 1½m Azamour. Stepped up on debut to win 1¼m maiden here before a good second in listed race at Navan. Didn't do himself justice in Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot since (raced freely). May resume progress if settling better this time.
