Timeform View

TUCO SALAMANCA sets a clear standard on his first foray into listed company following another personal best from a lofty handicap rating when second in the Ayr Gold Cup a fortnight ago. Last year's winner Shagraan returned to his best fitted with first-time cheekpieces when third in a Group 3 at Newbury recently and should give another good account if the headgear works as well for a second time. Fluorescence has made good strides forward this season and completes the shortlist.

Timeform Comments

Air Force One (IRE)
Has a most admirable record this season, scoring at the Ebor Meeting in August and producing another career best resuming winning ways in the Portland Handicap at Doncaster (5.6f, good) 3 weeks ago. Well worth a shot at this level.
Aramram (IRE)
Smart course winner who shaped well in the Great St Wilfred Handicap at Ripon in August, faring best of the 4 that explored the far side. Flying too high in the Sprint Cup next time but run best excused in Ayr Gold Cup latest given the ground and the trouble he met.
Baker Blue
Useful and reliable sprinter who produced a career best when making all in 10-runner handicap at Chester (5f, soft) 22 days ago. However, will likely find it much harder to pull off those tactics back at this level, particularly given the demands of this track.
King Of Light
Proved at least as good as ever when winning 5f Haydock handicap for second year running last week, albeit having a positional advantage towards the stand rail. Has more on his plate back up in grade.
Lifeplan (IRE)
Looked an exciting prospect when making it 2-2 in the Gimcrack at York last summer. Suffered a couple of setbacks in the off-season prior to shaping encouragingly at Chester (6f) on reappearance. Flying too high over a trip too far at York latest and this is more suitable in first-time blinkers.
Regional
Enthusiastic sort who is not the fore of old (2023 Sprint Cup winner) but again showed his effectiveness fresh when third of 13 in Group 2 Minster Stakes at York in May. Hasn't quite reproduced that in 3 subsequent outings but has frame claims once again.
Shagraan (IRE)
Dual listed winner last season for Michael Appleby, including in this corresponding event. Went backwards from a sound start for current yard but bounced right back to his best in first-time cheekpieces when close third in Group 3 at Newbury latest. Should go well again if headgear has same effect.
Tuco Salamanca (IRE)
Had done most of his winning on all-weather prior to a career-best success in a C&D handicap on Shergar Cup Day in August, settling things with a fine turn of foot on first start over 5f. Put up another personal best when second of 24 in Ayr Gold Cup since and sets the standard.
Fluorescence
Has made excellent strides forward this season, relishing every ingredient of a strongly-run extended 5f on ground softer than good when routing her 13 rivals in an Ayr listed event 15 days ago. Has solid each-way claims If reproducing that back under less testing conditions.
First Instinct
Had cut little ice when faced with quite stiff tasks over 5f on her first 2 starts this season and bounced back to something like her best when second of 13 in the Summer Stakes at York (6f) in July. Underperformed at Naas next time but wasn't disgraced in 5f Group 3 at Newbury latest.
Heavenly Heather
Seemed to excel herself when sixth of 26 in Group 1 King Charles III at the Royal Meeting (5f) in June. Showed that to be no fluke when mid-field in the Nunthorpe at York 2 starts later and shaped as if still in good form when 7 lengths ninth of 14 to Fluorescence in Ayr listed race since.
