ZAFAAN had plenty in the tank when going in at Wolverhampton last week and is hard to side against turned out under a penalty with Henry Callan now in the saddle. Recent Newcastle scorer West Sleekburn Lad could emerge as the main danger with this step up in trip a likely positive, although both Beaune and Stitching Wheel can also play a prominent role in this competitive amateur riders handicap.

Timeform Comments

Stitching Wheel (IRE)
Scored at Redcar in June and in good nick since, making effort earlier than ideal when fifth of 6 in handicap at Newmarket (1¾m, good to firm) in August. Well in the mix eased 1 lb with Simon Walker in the saddle.
Cougar (JPN)
Back-to-back winner last September for Iain Jardine. Well below his best this season though for 3 different yards, last of 9 over 11f here on yard debut 19 days ago.
Beaune (IRE)
A 3-time all-weather winner early in 2026. Largely running well of late until tenth of 12 in handicap at Chester (2m, soft) last time. Could bounce back off a handy-looking mark.
Zafaan (IRE)
In fine form of late, following up hurdles win at Worcester with very easy success in 10-runner handicap at Wolverhampton (1¾m) 8 days ago. Big shout under a penalty with Henry Callan up.
Shahbaz (IRE)
Good second in amateur race at Wolverhampton in February but has struggled on turf more recently. Needs to take a step forward in refitted cheekpieces.
Different Drum
Scored over hurdles at Carlisle and posted a solid third of 11 in handicap here later in April. Not dismissed after a break though.
Artavian
Eleven runs since last win in 2024. Blinkered for first time (usually visored) when a respectable third of 11 in handicap at Windsor (11.5f, good) 22 days ago. Back up in trip and not ruled out.
The Pug (IRE)
Not the most reliable but in a good vein of form at present, second of 9 in 11f handicap here 19 days ago. Possibilities.
Crazy Plan
Twice runner-up in all-weather handicaps this summer but she failed to beat a rival in handicap at Windsor (11.5f, good) 22 days ago. Has a bit to prove now.
West Sleekburn Lad
Lightly-raced son of Golden Horn who took a big step forward on his handicap bow when winning 11-runner event at Newcastle (1½m) 17 days ago. Up 5 lb but he's a player with this longer trip a likely plus and Eireann Cagney up.
Make It Up (IRE)
Best effort when second in Lingfield classified event (1½m, all-weather) in July but a well-held seventh of 9 back there 26 days ago. Bounce back needed.
Go Teejay
Limited maiden. Not discredited when sixth of 11 to West Sleekburn Lad in handicap at Newcastle (1½m) last time. Others appeal more.
