Timeform View

DILIGENT RESDEV caught the eye back from a break at Southwell last time and could be ready to strike having now dipped below his last winning mark, with his record here also a positive. Magic Boy remains of interest and is second choice, while the unexposed Kennington took a big step back in the right direction at Goodwood.

Timeform Comments

Obelix
Back to winning ways at Wetherby in June and continues to hold his form, third at Beverley 17 days ago, though once again highlighting he is the sort who needs a fair bit to fall right.
Diligent Resdev
C&D winner who shaped well back from a break at Southwell 5 weeks ago, not ideally placed. Finally lower in the handicap than when winning the 2024 Ayr Bronze Cup.
Magic Boy (GER)
Has improved again this season, landing 19-runner contest over 6f here before quickly bouncing back with an excellent close third of 20 at Ripon. Effective over 7f so on the shortlist.
Son
Just a maiden win to his name despite a sliding mark and found run of good form coming to a halt at Ascot last week.
Melvin Udall (IRE)
Made a winning seasonal/stable debut at Doncaster in March. Below par next 3 outings but was back to form when third of 19 here (1m) last month, though seeming suited by the extra 1f.
King Of Fury (IRE)
Registered back-to-back Southwell victories in July but has gone backwards since and is tough to recommend at present.
Quest For Fun
Well over a year since his last win but good placed efforts 3 of last 4 starts, including when a close second over C&D last month (rarely runs a bad race at this venue).
First Time (IRE)
Won a 6f Newmarket maiden last summer for Harry Charlton. Largely proved consistent in handicaps for current yard this season, beaten less than a length in this headgear at Chester latest.
Stanley Spencer (IRE)
Multiple all-weather winner but well held back on turf last 3 starts for new yard.
Feel The Need
Not easy to win with lately but had signalled a return to form at Doncaster and confirmed that impression when ending losing run in comfortable fashion at Southwell 2 weeks ago. Will find this more competitive but 6 lb rise seems fair.
Big Cyril (IRE)
Placed at listed level as a 2-y-o in 2024 but found things tough during a light 3-y-o campaign and little promise both starts for new yard after 13 months off.
King's School
Ran well back on turf when third at Ayr 3 weeks ago but seems most effective at Newcastle (all 4 career wins there).
Lord Bertie (FR)
Signs of decline this season and while he's eased to a competitive mark, he seems best when conditions are testing.
Golden Strike (IRE)
Gained a second win of the season in big-field handicap over C&D in May. Continued in good heart until a below-par effort at Catterick 9 days ago.
Invincible Boy (IRE)
Landed a soft-ground Pontefract novice on reappearance in April but below that form switched to handicaps since.
Golden Pharaoh (IRE)
Sole win from 23 runs came at Ffos Las last autumn. Generally struggled on the all weather early this year and was well held back from 7 months off at Southwell last week.
Mystical Storm
Took advantage of the drop in class when winning his first handicap making all-weather debut at Southwell 2 weeks ago but not an obvious type to follow up back on turf.
The Childe Of Hale
Arrives at the top of his game, winning at Redcar last month before backing that up with a good second under a penalty. Will find this harder off revised mark, though.
Calyxoh (IRE)
Untrustworthy sort who has looked on the downgrade for current yard. Likely to find this too competitive.
Packetofbiscuits
Enjoyed a fine spell on all weather earlier in the year, recording back-to-back wins at Southwell. Bounced back to form after a quiet spell when close second at Yarmouth but only sixth back on the all-weather 2 weeks ago.
Tolstoy (IRE)
Quirky sort who ended a long losing sequence (in refitted hood) in classified event at Doncaster last month (form worked out surprisingly well). Not seen to best effect back in a handicap at Ascot since.
Kennington
Impressively landed 7f novice at Lingfield in June. Disappointed next 2 starts in handicaps but showed a lot more when mid-field at Goodwood, shaping as if a return to 7f will suit. Headgear on.
