Timeform View

NAVAL TRIBUTE has been most progressive since stepped up to 2m and is taken to pull out even more for this slightly longer trip and make it 5-7 in handicaps for his excellent trainer. Mountain Road could have fared better with the draw but is another who has really got back on the up since faced with 2m again and is second choice ahead of Sea Lantern, who is very much the unknown quantity, and last year's 1-2 Beylerbeyi and Dawn Rising.

Timeform Comments

Tactician
Made up into a useful stayer in 2024, winning twice. Encouraging return from long absence when 2¼ lengths third of 8 to Midak in listed race at Chester (14.4f, good) 7 weeks ago. That resulted in his mark going up significantly but he still has the potential to build on it.
Beylerbeyi
Saw off Dawn Rising to win this race under Billy Loughnane last year. Back to best when fifth of 22 in Ebor at York in August and backed that up with a good 1¼ lengths second to Caballo De Mar in Doncaster Cup (2¼m, good to firm) last month. 10 lb higher than last year but still respected.
Align The Stars (IRE)
Better than ever when bagging the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle (2m) in June but found it tough off his revised mark at Glorious Goodwood and ran as if amiss in the Ebor.
Berkshire Sundance (IRE)
Enhanced a then remarkable strike rate when scoring on All-Weather Finals Day at Newcastle in April. Produced a career best on first handicap start over an extreme distance when 3 lengths second at Glorious Goodwood (2½m) in late July. Not disgraced in the face of stiff task in Doncaster Cup since.
Valedictory
Has improved since fitted with headgear and upped in trip, making it 3 wins in his last 5 starts when landing the Mallard at Doncaster (14.5f, good to firm) in a first-time visor (retained) 4 weeks ago. Carries a 4 lb penalty racing beyond 2m for first time.
Kirchner (IRE)
Not long with the excellent James Owen yard and went close in the Northumberland Plate before opening his account for the season in 4-runner handicap at Ascot (2m) in July. Respectable sixth of 16 to Small Fry (Mountain Road second) at York (2m, good to soft) since.
Dawn Rising (IRE)
Not an obvious one on this year's efforts over shorter trips but he was second to Beylerbeyi in this off the same mark 12 months ago and this has presumably been the plan all along. Likely to be popular under Ryan Moore.
Manxman (IRE)
Narrowly denied by Alphonse Le Grande in this race on soft 2 years ago and arrives on the back of a wide-margin win on heavy at Goodwood (2m). His penalty is more than offset by Toby Moore's claim but opposable away from the mud.
Tashkhan (IRE)
Really smart on the Flat in his prime but no win in this sphere since 2023. Was successful in a maiden hurdle last winter but well held back on the Flat last twice. Hard to fancy.
Reverend Hubert (IRE)
C&D winner who was fifth in last year's Cesarewitch. Has continued on the up under both codes since, most recently winning a 3m Down Royal conditions hurdle at the end of August. More on his plate off this clear career-high mark on the level but further progress isn't ruled out.
Cock And Bull (IRE)
Disappointing over hurdles for current connections but back to best returned to Flat over the summer, building on Curragh third with a defeat of Wahraan in a big-field handicap at Galway Festival (16.5f, soft) in July. First-time tongue tie worn at Galway is combined with new cheekpieces.
Mountain Road (FR)
Back to winning ways at Thirsk (2m, good) in May and has shaped well in defeat on both outings since, particularly when clear best of the rest behind the progressive Small Fry at the York Ebor meeting. Went up 4 lb for that but still looks well treated.
Shrimp Shady
Low-mileage 4-y-o who returned to turf to land the Chester Plate in May and found a bit more improvement when edging out Team Player at Newbury (16.5f) in July. Another fine effort when second at Ascot (2m) in August and might have found run coming too soon when behind a few of these at York since.
Bahadur
Landed a hat-trick on the all-weather at the end of last year and added to his tally over 2m at Goodwood (good) in May. Hasn't found the same form since, proving no match for Manxman back at Goodwood latest.
Sea Lantern
Successful on second of 2 starts in Irish maidens last summer and further progress for new yard, making a winning handicap debut over 1½m at Pontefract (good to soft) 23 days ago. Off the bridle a long way out there so his run style suggests this much longer trip could suit. Very much unexposed.
Sax Appeal
Took advantage of his falling mark when making all in a small field at Ripon (2m, good) a fortnight ago but opposable under a 4 lb penalty in this significantly stronger race, particularly from a wide draw.
Dream On Baby (IRE)
Useful over hurdles and improved to open her account in this sphere in 9-runner Tramore maiden (2m, good) in August. Very much unexposed as a stayer on the Flat for her much-respected yard.
Alphonse Le Grande (IRE)
Edged out Manxman in this race in 2024. Couple of creditable efforts in strong staying handicaps in Britain this year and not disgraced when mid-field in the Irish Cesarewitch last time. Can't dismiss from the same mark as 2024.
Pole Star
Controlled things from the front when back to winning ways in 2m Chester handicap (good to soft) 4 weeks ago but unlikely he'll be able to do likewise here. Has a 4 lb penalty.
Highwind (FR)
Hasn't stood much racing in recent seasons but has posted a series of respectable efforts on the Flat this year, including 5 lengths third over 17f at Clonmel latest. Doesn't obviously have much in hand of his mark, though.
Naval Tribute
Progressive sort who made it 4-6 in handicaps when well on top over 2m at Kempton 35 days ago. This is a sterner test but he's heading in the right direction and looks well-in under a 4 lb penalty.
High Fibre (IRE)
Yet another to react positively to a switch to the James Owen yard, winning valuable handicap hurdle at Market Rasen in July before returning to the Flat to see off stablemate Percy Shelley on the July Course here in August. Had Percy Shelley behind again when second at York (2m) since.
Percy Shelley
Scored over hurdles for this yard last autumn but his only wins on the Flat came in France in 2022. Has posted creditable in-frame efforts behind some of today's rivals on his last 3 starts but suspicion the wait for another Flat win will go on.
Letsbefrank (IRE)
Landed a £100,000 Sky Bet Sunday Series bonus for a second time when comfortably seeing off 4 rivals over 17f at Pontefract under Lauren Young in August. Still looks on a competitive mark after a 4 lb rise.
Gooloogong (IRE)
Back in fine form this year, including an emphatic success at Goodwood (1¾m, heavy) at the end of August. Found an 11 lb hike more than enough to stop him in the trial here 3 weeks ago but is effectively running off 7 lb lower here under a 4 lb penalty for the Goodwood success.
Premiere Ligne (FR)
Revitalised by a switch to front-running when dominating the trial for this race 3 weeks ago but pulling off similar tactics in this much more competitive scenario will be significantly harder.
Wahraan (FR)
Quirky sort. Pushed Cock And Bull close in 2m Flat handicap at Galway Festival (soft) in late-July. Still looked to be in form when beaten 15 lengths over hurdles there 4 days later but only sixth of 7 back on Flat at Musselburgh since.
Appier (IRE)
Made a winning start for Tony Carroll at Goodwood (1¾m, heavy) in June. Not disgraced next 2 outings but well held in the trial for this race here 3 weeks ago.
Vaguely Royal (IRE)
Rejuvenated by switch to visor when landing back-to-back wins at Chester and York in July but held twice since and faces a stiff task from out of the weights in refitted blinkers.
