Timeform View

Andrew Balding's OLD IS GOLD has proved a different model since the visor went on and this front runner can make light of a 9 lb weights hike for his easy Newmarket success and complete a quick hat-trick. Ayr Gold Cup hero Pellitory continues in fine form and heads a long list of dangers with last year's winner Binhareer also a likely player. Coul Angel, Fine Interview, Toyotomi and Grasmere Boy all command plenty of respect too in this cracking sprint.

Timeform Comments

Pellitory
Versatile type notched a fourth career 7f victory at Haydock in August. Has taken his form up another level since tongue tied with success in Ayr Gold Cup (6f, heavy) before an excellent fourth of 18 at Ascot (7f, good to firm) a week ago when not enjoying the smoothest of passages. Player.
Al Shabab Storm
Group 3 winner in 2024 for Andrew Balding. Back to that sort of form since fitted with a tongue strap, scoring at Newcastle in June and a very good third of 21 in Portland at Doncaster (5.6f, good) 4 weeks ago. Needs considering nudged up 1 lb.
Coul Angel (IRE)
Reliable type won 5 times last year and built on promising back-to-back placed C&D efforts with a first win of 2026 in 24-runner handicap at the Curragh (6f, good to soft) last month. Hiked up 8 lb but scored comfortably there and not taken lightly.
Binhareer (IRE)
Took this in fine style 12 months ago. Caught the eye over C&D on his return but has failed to kick on, never able to land a blow after a tardy start when ninth of 24 to Pellitory in Ayr Gold Cup (6f, heavy) 3 weeks ago. No surprise to see him bounce back here off a handy-looking mark.
Rock On Thunder (IRE)
Standout career effort when runner-up in the Gimcrack over C&D last August. Yet to fire this season and underwent a breathing operation before a below-par fifteenth of 24 to Pellitory in Ayr Gold Cup (6f, heavy) 3 wees ago.
Dark Thirty (IRE)
Better than ever this year, winning over C&D and at Chester in early summer. Has twice run really well when placed at the Curragh since but came in last of 12 at Ripon (6f, good to firm) 14 days ago. The sort to bounce back.
Fine Interview (FR)
Successful at Doncaster (6f) in March and back in fine form after a break, a close seventh in Constantine over C&D before fourth of 24 to Pellitory in Ayr Gold Cup (6f, heavy) 3 weeks ago when second best in his group. Blinkers replace usual cheekpieces. Well in the mix.
Ardisia (IRE)
Capped a prolific juvenile season with success in Two-Year-Old Trophy at Redcar last autumn. Back to his very best of late with second at Goodwood (6f) and close seventh of 24 to Pellitory in Ayr Gold Cup (6f, heavy). Likely to be on the premises again.
Wiltshire
Slow starter who landed a smart success on All-Weather Finals Day in April but well below par and has sometimes looked reluctant since. Cheekpieces go on for the first time.
Red Spells Danger (IRE)
Gained a third 6f handicap victory of the year at Ascot in August. Well held in Constantine over C&D and in Ayr Gold Cup (6f, heavy) since, though. Bounce back is required.
Annaf (IRE)
Ended 2025 with a Group 3 success at Ascot (6f) in October. Yet to score this year but back in form with fourth in Portland at Doncaster (5.5f) and tenth of 18 at Ascot (6f, good to firm) last 2 runs. Possibilities from an easing mark.
Old Is Gold (IRE)
Very much on the up since the visor went on and followed all-the-way success at Goodwood (6f, heavy) with easy victory in 9-runner handicap at Newmarket (6f, good to firm) 3 weeks ago. Hiked up 9 lb but merits serious consideration in his hat-trick bid.
Toyotomi (FR)
Listed winner when trained in France. Got off the mark for current yard at Goodwood (6f, soft) in June and posted his best effort with third of 23 in Ayr Silver Cup (6f, heavy) 3 weeks ago. Can go well again off the same mark.
Grasmere Boy
Dual 6f winner at Ripon and Chester in early summer. Took his form to a new level with positive tactics readopted when a ready success in 9-runner handicap at Thirsk (6f, good to soft) last month. Very much one to consider despite a 6 lb weights rise.
Alfa Kellenic
Completed a fantastic 6-timer (including over C&D) in 2024. Not at her best in a light 2025 and had a breathing operation before a below-par sixth in listed race at Southwell (6f) 10 months ago. This is no easy return.
Hammer The Hammer (IRE)
A 3-time 5f/6f winner in 2025. Yet to fire this season and he came in a below-form fourteenth of 24 to Pellitory in Ayr Gold Cup (6f, heavy) last time.
U Sure Do (IRE)
Seems better than ever of late, and he followed up Haydock (7f) success with cosy victory at Ripon (6f, good to firm) in first-time blinkers (retained) 2 weeks ago. Seems sure to go well again despite having career-high mark to overcome.
Strike Red (IRE)
Grand servant who took this prize in 2022 and 2024. Has won twice this year at Leicester and Hamilton but found out back in deeper company last 2 runs at Goodwood and the Curragh. Visor is tried for the first time
Advertised (IRE)
Dual 6f/7f winner at Newcastle last year. Back to form with second at Hamilton (5f) in August and suffered a poor run when ninth of 23 in Ayr Silver Cup (6f, heavy) 3 weeks ago. Not out of things eased 1 lb.
Apollo One
Not the easiest to win with but he arrives in good form, not seen to best effect when eighth of 21 in Portland at Doncaster (5.5f, good) last month. Not ruled out off 2 lb lower here.
Jordan Electrics
Veteran who recorded a tenth win at Hamilton (5f) in September. Went without his usual cheekpieces when a below-par fourth of 9 there (5f, soft) since. Can bounce back with headgear refitted.
Trilby
Rejuvenated by fitting of cheekpieces this season and notched a third success at Beverley (5f) in August. Very good sixth in Ayr Silver Cup (6f, heavy) since but rare modest effort when eighth of 10 at Haydock (5f, soft) last time. The sort to bounce back.
