Timeform View

VENETIAN LION still looks ahead of his mark and may enhance William Haggas' fine recent record in this race if coping with conditions. Mudlarks Thunder Roar and The Resdev Scholar are next best in an open-looking handicap, with Lir Speciale another to note on this sort of ground.

Timeform Comments

Return To Unit
First off the bridle when forging clear to land a second Nottingham success (1m, soft) in June. Wasn't in same form returned to less testing conditions at Hamilton (9f) latest. Returns from further 9 weeks away without blinkers, connections presumably waiting for this ground (lightly raced for age).
Thunder Roar
Useful winner of soft-ground handicap at Ayr this time last year. Hasn't been in anything like the same form this season but that's reflected in his mark, and he did travel with some verve when beaten 7½ lengths in first-time visor (retained) at Hamilton last time. Needs a second look.
Maximising (IRE)
Chased home very useful handicapper at Kempton prior to going one better on belated turn to turf at Windsor in August. Had to wait for gap/finished best when ½-length third behind Rajapour (entered in race 2) at Hamilton (8.5f, soft) latest. Should give another good account.
Darkness (FR)
Veteran who is versatile with regards ground/trip. Only picked off late by an unexposed one when a length second (clear of rest) in similar company at Nottingham (8.5f, soft) 9 days ago. Remains on a career-low mark and has to be respected.
Rhoscolyn
Fallen long way in the weights since last season's success in Golden Mile at Glorious Goodwood. Found some form when making it back-to-back seconds in a soft-ground handicap here (7f) prior to running no sort of race at Hamilton subsequently. Clearly capable of this sort of mark if on a going day.
Vidmiyr (IRE)
Added to a fine record on ground softer than good when winning in smooth style at Chester (7.5f, good to soft) in early-September. Mitigating factors there next time, however, will need another career best upped in grade here.
Lir Speciale (IRE)
Ended 2025 with back-to-back wins (heavy) at Doncaster. Tad disappointing faced with soft ground for the first time this year at Hamilton latest, beaten 7¼ lengths. Has been given another chance by the handicapper, though, and prospect of even more testing conditions certainly in his favour.
Milteye
Ground-versatile 6-y-o. Now 3 lb below his latest winning mark following a patchy run of form. Cheekpieces go on for first time since joining present yard (has responded well previously) and cannot be totally discounted.
Venetian Lion
Highly progressive since addition of a tongue strap, completing a hat-trick in style at Pontefract last month. Shaped as though still well treated at Kempton since and yard has won 2 of last 3 renewals of this race. Must be the call for all the ground is a concern given his strong-travelling style.
The Resdev Scholar (IRE)
A 3-time winner in 2025, including twice on heavy. Best effort this year when runner-up at Chester (7.5f, soft) in June. Type to bounce back from a lesser run at the same track last time, especially with conditions in his favour on this occasion.
