Timeform View

Remarkable mare KALPANA has had some tough battles this year but may have enough left in the tank to secure a third successive victory in this race. Minnie Hauk's standout effort this season came when runner-up in the Prince of Wales's Stakes here, and she's feared most if recapturing that sort of form. Sparan Nua was narrowly touched off by Kalpana at York and could be worth another chance to confirm that improvement, while impressive Irish Oaks winner Johanna Walsh isn't taken lightly.

Timeform Comments

Coedana (IRE)
Progressive filly who deservedly landed a breakthrough pattern success in the Group 3 Princess Royal Stakes at Newmarket (1½m) last month. Doesn't know how to run a bad race, though may simply be outclassed in presence of bona fide Group 1 performers here.
Danielle
Smart Group 3 winner. Finished 5 lengths fifth on firmer-than-ideal ground in this corresponding event 12 months ago. Underlined that she's now a better filly when runner-up in Park Hill at Doncaster (14.5f) last time, typically finding plenty for pressure. Ideally needed more rain, though.
Kalpana
High-class mare. Successful in previous 2 renewals of this race. Better than ever when landing the King George in July. Followed up with a gusty win in the Yorkshire Oaks and perhaps wasn't over that when 3½-length fifth in the Arc last time. The form pick but her busy season does give some pause.
Minnie Hauk (IRE)
Narrowly denied a remarkable 6-timer in last year's Arc. Best effort since when splitting Ombudsman and a below-par Daryz over a trip short of her best here (1¼m) in June. No excuses behind Kalpana in the Yorkshire Oaks/Arc since, however, she'd be interesting if back to her Prince of Wales's form.
See The Fire
Smart mare who was beaten 3 lengths in the Champion Stakes (soft) at this fixture 2 years ago. Every bit as good when winning Group 2 Middleton at York this May and nearly added a first top-level success in Group 1 (1¼m) at Woodbine latest. Still looks the clear stable second string on form.
Tajlina
Lightly-raced 4-y-o whose dam finished runner-up in the 2017 renewal of this race. Won a fillies Group 3 in France last spring. Looked unlucky not to make the places when taking on the boys in a Longchamp Group 3 (1¼m) on latest start in June. Will need to improve significantly for the longer trip.
Believed (IRE)
Improving Frankel filly who finished a close third in strong King George V Handicap at the Royal Meeting in June. Found plenty to resume progress with Group 3 success at Cork last time. Should again benefit from a well-run race, however, this is a big step up in class.
Inis Mor (FR)
Smart filly. Won a listed race at Goodwood in May before progressing to place in the French and Irish Oaks. Missed a good opportunity to add a Group 3 to her resume when ½-length second to Coedana in Princess Royal last time. Looks up against it in this company, even if recapturing her Classic form.
Johanna Walsh (IRE)
Looked potentially very smart when cosily winning an open-looking renewal of the Irish Oaks at the Curragh in July. Soft ground perhaps a factor in her subsequent underwhelming effort behind Kalpana in the Yorkshire Oaks. Certainly in the right hands to get back on track.
Lilt
From a high-class family. Impressed when making it 2-2 in a York listed race on return prior to her 4½-length sixth in the Prix de Diane. Back on the up (despite looking ungainly) when runner-up to Thundering On at the Curragh last time. Shapes as though she'll appreciate this longer trip, too.
Sparan Nua (IRE)
Unbeaten prior to chasing home Johanna Walsh in Irish Oaks. Looked a tad unfortunate not to reel in Kalpana in the Yorkshire Oaks (soft) in August. Didn't confirm that marked improvement under contrasting conditions in the Prix Vermeille, though this race could well pan out more favourably.
Sugar Island (IRE)
Hasn't kicked on since finishing third in the Oaks at Epsom in June. Built up a big lead/forced Kalpana to make her effort earlier than ideal in the Yorkshire Oaks in August. Again likely to be employed as a pacemaker for Minnie Hauk.
Symbol Of Majesty
Runner-up in a strong renewal of the Sandringham here before notching a third win from 5 starts in a Deauville Group 3 in August. Ran as well as could be expected when 4¾ lengths behind Thundering On in Group 2 Blandford at the Curragh subsequently. Cheekpieces go on and she has plenty to find.
