HAVE SECRET has dipped to only 1 lb higher than when second in this on heavy last year and might be worth chancing having shaped as if still in good form when seventh in a big field at York a fortnight ago. The way Mondo Man ploughed through the mud to easily win the Imperial Cup over hurdles at Sandown back in March makes him an interesting contender, particularly as he was capable of smart form on the Flat in France earlier in his career. Shafdar and Castlemont also make the shortlist.

Timeform Comments

Mondo Man
Smart on Flat in France earlier in career. Two hurdle wins for current yard last season, including in the Imperial Cup at Sandown (soft) in March. Met trouble returned to the Flat at Royal Ascot in June. Freshened up since and will be fine on this ground. Has to enter calculations.
Castlemont (IRE)
Brother to high-class winner Bay Bridge and he looked a smart prospect when winning his first 2 starts. Lost unbeaten record with a whimper when a remote last of 4 in 1½m Newmarket listed race 4 weeks ago but remains with potential for top yard now handicapping. Hooded first time.
Ultrasoul (IRE)
Ended 2025 on the upgrade with wins at Kempton and Nottingham (soft). Completed the hat-trick in 10-runner handicap at Chester (10.3f, good to soft) on return in June. Reported to have burst blood vessel when well held at Southwell next time. Has a hood refitted back from 11 weeks off.
Bunyola Bay (IRE)
Produced a very useful effort to double his tally in Gowran Classic (9.5f, good) in June but has failed to reproduce that level in 3 outings since, including a C&D handicap at the St Leger meeting 6 weeks ago. Showed promise on heavy ground last year. Bounce back needed.
Principality (IRE)
Winner around 1m at Nottingham (good) in May and Newmarket (good to firm) in July. Good second at Salsibury (1m, good to soft) last month but well beaten in the Cambridgeshire since. First attempt at 1¼m.
Shafdar (IRE)
Made the frame at Glorious Goodwood and York's Ebor Festival before gaining the third success of a productive first campaign with this stable at Chester (10.3f, good to soft) last month. Shaped as if still in good form (denied a clear run) when mid-division in the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket since.
Janey Mackers (IRE)
Course maiden winner on soft as a juvenile and also landed a 1¼m Newbury handicap (good to soft) last season. Respectable third of 11on Chester reappearance (10.3f, good to firm) in May. Off since but does return with her stable in form.
City Of Delight (USA)
Shot up in the weights after winning 6 times in 7 starts between summer 2024 and spring 2025, including C&D. As good as ever when second at Goodwood in May. Off since a respectable seventh of 16 at York in June but David Menuisier has his team in form.
A Major Payne
Reliable performer who improved a little further to score for the third time in 2026 at Goodwood (1¼m, good to soft) under Oisin Murphy 8 weeks ago. Up to a career-high mark but likely to give another good account.
Mustazeed (IRE)
C&D winner who goes well in the mud but has become unreliable, including refusing to race for a second time in last 4 starts at Sandown in June. Has left Harry Eustace.
Spioradalta
Likeable and genuine sort who notched 2 wins at Ripon in the spring. Also good second there in July and has a wide draw as an excuse for a lesser run at Chester last time. Being eased 2 lb can only help.
Have Secret (IRE)
Better than ever when winning at Pontefract in the spring. Put a quiet spell behind him when fourth in a big field at York last month and shaped as if still in good form when seventh of 18 back at York a fortnight ago. Runner-up in this off just 1 lb lower last year.
Devil's Peak
Not straightforward (carries head high) but has won a couple of handicaps this year, including a 1½m event at last month's St Leger meeting here. Ran poorly in the recent Old Rowley Cup at Newmarket, though. A first-time visor replaces blinkers worn on last 6 outings.
Wahdan (IRE)
One-time useful winner in France. Finally ended his losing run at Pontefract 16 days ago but started slowly and never involved in a much stronger race at York since.
Galyx (IRE)
Ridden more positively when enhancing his record on heavy ground to 3-3 at Beverley (1¼m) in August. Shaped as if still in form when fourth of 11 at Ayr (1¼m, soft) since.
Pearl Eye
Overcame a pace bias to justify support in a fairly useful handicap at Ayr (13f, soft) last time. Bettered that form when going down only to a progressive 3-y-o (pulled 6 lengths clear of third) at York (10.3f, soft) 2 weeks ago.
