Timeform View

Gordon Elliott has a remarkable record in this race, winning 9 of the last 10 renewals, and he has an excellent chance of adding to that tally with BALLYFAD, who is comfortably the best of these over hurdles and was an impressive winner on his sole start in a point. It's probably significant that French-recruit Matin Midi et Soir was sent off favourite when down the field in the Grade 1 Champion Juvenile Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival, and he rates as the primary threat.

Timeform Comments

Arcadian Emperor (FR)
Lightly-raced winner over hurdles. Type to make a better chaser (point winner) and made an encouraging start in this sphere fitted with a tongue strap when second in maiden at Gowran on return. Will improve but this tougher.
Ballyfad (IRE)
Won both bumpers before making successful switch to hurdling at Leopardstown. Placed 2 of 3 starts in Grade 1s since, including when third at Aintree final start. Type to make a better chaser (impressive point winner) and yard has superb record in this. Should take the beating.
Daydream Nation (IRE)
Point winner who made a winning handicap debut in hurdle at Leopardstown in March. However, well below that level sent chasing this autumn, his jumping still needing a fair amount of work.
Grey Ace (IRE)
Kingston Hill gelding. Dam, placed over hurdles/fences in France, half-sister to fairly useful chaser (stayed 2½m) Val d'Arc. Wears tongue strap. Looked one for the long-term in novice hurdle at Downpatrick.
Kazansky (IRE)
Brought down on hurdles bow but won next 2 starts, including Limerick Grade 2 (23f, heavy) over Christmas. Backed that up when second in Leopardstown Grade 1 but well held at Cheltenham/Punchestown Festivals since. Makes chase debut (point winner).
Largy Hill (IRE)
Bumper winner who made it 2-3 over hurdles in Grade 3 at Thurles in February 2024. Shaped as if retaining plenty of ability sent chasing on first run since (32 months) at Listowel 5 weeks ago entitled to come on from that.
Maganey (IRE)
€28,000 7-y-o, Flemensfirth gelding. Brother to fair hurdlers Big Fish and Minelladestination, and half-brother to a bumper winner. Dam 2¾m-25f hurdle winner. Successful on last 2 of 6 starts in points but starting out in a warm maiden.
Polepatrick (IRE)
Improved markedly from his hurdling debut when successful in a Tramore maiden in April. Disappointed next time (final start for Henry de Bromhead) but got back on track on chase bow when third at Galway for Mark Edmund McCrory. More needed back with former yard.
Port Authority (IRE)
£200,000 purchase after winning a point and he easily landed a Naas maiden hurdle on Rules debut last autumn, drawing right away from the last flight. Off since failing to meet expectations in Grade 2 at Navan the following month but he remains with plenty of potential now chasing.
Sept Etoiles (FR)
Improved on hurdling debut form when landing maiden at Down Royal in December. Shaped as if amiss next time before resuming progress with victory in 20-runner listed handicap at Fairyhouse (23.8f) in April. Not in same form later that month and this trip looks short enough on chase bow.
Timeless Treaty (IRE)
Useful and consistent hurdler for Gordon Elliott. Probably best watched on return/chase bow for new yard.
Walks In June (IRE)
Bred to stay well and resumed progress to make a winning handicap debut over hurdles at Leopardstown (20.5f) in December. Outclassed in the Cheltenham Festival since but he remains with potential now chasing (won sole start in points).
Zanndabad (IRE)
Useful on the Flat and belatedly matched that level over hurdles when winning twice last autumn. Well held last 2 starts on the level, though, and not an obvious chasing type.
Matin Midi Et Soir (FR)
Quickly developed into a useful hurdler at Auteuil, his latest success coming in a Group 3 over 2¼m last autumn. Failed to live up to his billing for new connections at Punchestown in May after 8 months off but that was in a Grade 1. Tongue strap on for chase debut. Well worth another chance.
