Timeform View

Despite failing to win a bumper between them, SMOKEHOUSE and The Mad Poet displayed plenty of ability and they could be the pair to focus on now hurdling. Marginal preference is for the Snowden inmate. Of the rest, point recruit Without Cause has to be of interest.

Timeform Comments

Baddy Wood (IRE)
Capri gelding. First foal, dam (c96/h89), 2m hurdle/chase winner, half-sister to fairly useful hurdler/smart chaser (stayed 3m) Fistral Beach and useful hurdler/chaser (stayed 29f) Rons Dream. Newcomer for respected stable.
King Rolo
Limited impact both starts last month and is probably a handicap project.
Max D'airy (FR)
Dam maiden over jumps in France, from family of very smart staying chaser Virak. Promise when second of 8 in maiden bumper at Nancy last autumn. Changed hands for £100,000 after but he didn't look straightforward despite occupying same spot at Newton Abbot in April. Since left Paul Nicholls.
Padel Whacker
Yard has had success with this family but he failed to justify favouritism in Huntingdon bumper on debut in April and didn't fare much better at Plumpton the following month. Now goes hurdling.
Smokehouse (IRE)
£100,000 purchase after an Irish point win last March and showed plenty of ability when finding another expensive purchase from that sphere too good in a Southwell bumper in February. Rates a useful hurdling prospect for his in-form yard.
The Drunken Sailor
Dartmouth gelding. Dam (h94), maiden hurdler, half-sister to fairly useful hurdler/useful chaser (stayed 2¾m) Watcombe Heights out of useful 21f-2¾m hurdle winner Golden Bay. Wasn't unbacked but little in the way of promise in a course bumper in May. Is in very capable hands.
The Mad Poet (IRE)
Poet's Word gelding who is bred to be useful and produced a promising first effort when runner-up in a bumper at Wetherby (2m, good) last spring. Subsequent efforts in better company no backward step and he's sure to be well prepared for this first try hurdling. Shortlisted.
Without Cause (IRE)
€42,000 3-y-o, £100,000 4-y-o, Success Days gelding. Half-brother to fair hurdler/chaser Gabriel Ranger. Runner-up sole start in Irish points and he's a noteworthy Rules newcomer.
Galante De Vassy (FR)
Shaped well amidst obvious inexperience when third of 9 in a bumper at Ascot on debut in February. Things didn't pan out favourably next time at Kempton where she wasn't knocked about but this no easy introduction to hurdling.
Wet Sail
Getaway filly. Dam (c67/h112), 21f hurdle winner (stayed 3¼m), half-sister to fairly useful hurdler/chaser (stayed 3m) Golden Sunrise. Makes plenty of appeal on paper but limited short-term promise on recent debut at Worcester. Clear second string for the yard.
